Compass needle unstable during magnetic storms
These days Sun is errupting big masses of energy toward Earth. That causes huge magnetic storms on Earth.
One of the nicer side effect is visible Aurea Borealis (or Australis) in latitudes closer to Equator. You can even see it in Czech if you find a place with low light…

polution.The other effect is communication disturbance (radio, navigation...). Deviation in magnetic fields can be quite big. If measured with compass needle the deviation can make even 8 degrees as you can see on the chart from British Geological Survey bellow from another big magnetic storm in 2003.$$OBR172308$$
