do Desporto Militar é uma organização transnacional, com sede em Bruxelas, criada em 1948 com a finalidade de fomentar a paz e a amizade entre os militares através do Desporto. É conhecida pelas siglas CISM, da denominação em francês ? Conseil International du Sport Militaire. Em 1954, Portugal tornou-se no décimo oitavo membro da Organização e teve a honra de organizar em 2001, na cidade de Beja, o 34º Campeonato do Mundo de Orientação Militar.Para estes 41ºs Campeonatos do Mundo de Orientação Militar 2008, são 27 os países participantes, num total de 188 atletas registados até ao momento.
