Khramov then built a lead of 1 minute 33 secs over the Norwegian team in 2nd place on the second leg. Valentin Novikov on the final shorter leg kept his cool to extend the lead before having time to celebrate without the eventual silver medallists Sweden catching. The Russians were relatively clear in first position although the margin wasn't huge at any stage but it was an exciting battle for the other podium positions as the order changed several times during the 2nd and 3rd legs.
